I am an editor on the Business & Markets team at CNN Business. My role involves assigning and editing stories involving our team of reporters. I also work with other editors and reporters across other CNN Business teams, including Success, Technology, Business & Politics and Media.
Previously, I was a media reporter and breaking news writer.
The Indianapolis Star | Indianapolis | June 2012 — Aug. 2016
I am a reporter on the Star’s watchdog team covering criminal justice and public safety. This job requires me to develop sophisticated, long-form pieces while also juggling compelling, daily enterprise and major breaking news in a metropolitan area of 1.8 million people.
Since beginning my career at the Star in 2012 as a breaking news reporter, I’ve amassed more than 9,000 Twitter followers and covered a variety of topics, including courts, politics and city hall.
A glance at the breadth of my reporting:
- An investigation into the unsolved deaths of three women in an impoverished Indianapolis neighborhood and how the cases raise questions about the damage wrought by urban blight.
- A look into the soaring use of heroin and the challenges for both law enforcement and health providers.
- Award-winning coverage on court rulings legalizing gay marriage in Indiana.
- A report on a fatal bus crash, including follow-up stories on the lack of government oversight on private church buses.
- A narrative about the struggles of a family coping after a murder suicide.
- A house explosion that killed two people and leveled dozens of houses.
The Daily Herald | Arlington Heights, Ill. | May 2010 — May 2012
As an intern at the Herald in summer 2010, I managed dailyherald.com. My responsibilities included writing headlines, adding links and multimedia to story packages, and judging content placement. I returned twice in the following years to perform many of the same tasks.
Illinois Public Media | Urbana, Ill. | Jan. 2009 — May 2012
I operated cameras, worked with computer graphics and floor directed for pledge drives and regular programming at this PBS affiliate. I was also a panelist who supplied questions for a televised debate between local Illinois primary election candidates.
The Daily Illini | Champaign, Ill. | Sept. 2008 — May 2012
I was editor-in-chief of this award-winning daily student newspaper (circulation 15,000). I managed a staff of more than 120 in the production of news, sports, investigative and entertainment content. I also worked as a reporter, assistant news editor and news editor.
